Preferences of the Danish population (aged 18–75 years) and their WTP for changes in forest stand characteristics were studied by means of an illustrated questionnaire. Anchored in central economic theory, namely Lancaster’s (1966) consumer theory, the questionnaire was designed to allow for choice modelling
using CE to model people’s WTP for different forest stand characteristics and different combinations of these (see e.g., Adamowicz et al., 1998; Bateman et al., 2002).
Development of the questionnaire was an iterative process involving both experts and laypersons. A first draft of the questionnaire was discussed with foresters, landscape planners and economists with questionnaire survey experience. This was followed by three consecutive focus group tests with laypersons.
Furthermore, an internet-based pre-test with 53 respondentswas carried out before the questionnaire was finally considered adequate and suitable for generating a sufficient dataset for the subsequent statistical analysis.
