ubuntu8.10上不了网

我上网用的是ADSL USB MODEM 就是http://www.super-data.com.cn/adslusb.htm 上面的这个 装好ubuntu8.10以后在右上角连接那里输入用户名和密码以后还是上不了网。搜了一下说，好像是买个USB转网口的转换线就行了，不知道用这种方法可以解决吗？我是个大大的菜鸟，高手们帮助下！！
终端输入：sudo pppoeconf显示“sorry,I scanned 2 interfaces,but the Access concentrator of your did not respond.please check your network and modem cables.Another reason for the scan failure may also be another running pppoe process which controls the modem.”
