ESCANABA - The Bay College Board voted this week to add several new programs and courses to its list of offerings. Students will now be able to study and receive an associate's degree in applied science in hospitality management and an associate's in science in pre-natural resources, pre-professional health and pre-molecular biotechnology.
Bay College Executive Dean for Business, Technology & Workforce Development Alan Yeck said the degree in applied science in hospitality management is designed for students who wish to work in the travel and tourism industry.
According to the American Hotel and Lodging Association, tourism is the third largest retail industry in the United States and one of Michigan's largest employers. Yeck said with an education in hospitality management, graduates will have a wide variety of potential careers in hotel, restaurant, resort and tourism industries from which to choose.
"This degree is great for the person that wants to stay in the area, or the person that wants to see the world," said Yeck.
The lodging industry has advanced considerably from the simple "home away from home" philosophy, Yeck said.
"Over the years, technology has transformed the complex divisions in the hotel industry into an international enterprise of tourism," he said. "Computers, economics, personnel management and interpersonal communication are all skills which are required for success in the hotel and restaurant fields."
In addition to their degree, students will receive international certifications for various courses through the Educational Institute of the American Hotel & Lodging Association. Yeck said these certifications compliment classroom instruction in the hospitality industry.
Several new degree offerings in the life sciences arena were added to the curriculum as well, including associate's degrees in science in pre-natural resources, pre-professional health and pre-molecular biotechnology.
Vice President for Instruction and Student Learning Ed Ogle said the associate's degrees are designed for students who will continue their education at a university to receive a bachelor's degree in a more specific field.
"We've taken current classes and put them in to packages respective to those degree areas," said Ogle. "These are degrees for students that intend to complete the courses here and then transfer into the program at a university."
Ogle said the programs were developed by Dr. Brian Black, biology instructor at the college. He consulted very closely with Beth Noreus, transfer counselor, to make sure classes chosen for the programs will transfer to a university.
"What happens often is a student might say they are interested in natural resources, but are not sure exactly what they want to do," Ogle said. "(This way) they can start broadly without closing their options, and while they are studying they will get a taste for what their passion is. That's the benefit of the way these courses are packaged."
One other new item at Bay is the sustainability certificate. This program will recognize students who complete general education instruction surrounding the theme of sustainability.
These degree-offerings and several new and revised courses were approved by the Bay College Board at its regular meeting Wednesday night.
